Hi there I have A Problem with my upstairs toilet. When it is flushed it seems to flush normally but then the 'tide' ones up the pan by a couple of inches (not the whole way as when loo is totally blocked) and slops back and forwards a couple if times before the level settles. Once settled you can see particles swirling in the pan and over time the water becomes brown/yellow until next flush. We assumed was localised partial block and my OH has bought a twisty took for unblocking drains om a hardware shop and rodded it. I've also tried bleach and dishwasher detergent (not together!) but it remains this way? What else cam we try and what might the problem be? We are quite poor and my OH is very good at practical things so would prefer to solve it ourselves if we can. Thanks!

I think you must still have a partial blockage, and if you are using one of those twisty wire probe things, then thats simply not enough to clear a soil pipe.
Before you call out a drains specialist, can you locate a manhole cover outside, and have a look in there?
John :)

Hi john thanks for replying. No we've not tried that as kind of assumed the blockage to be near the toilet as it's an upstairs loo and the water seems to go down at normal speed but then some of it surges back into the bowl.

You have a blockage, if you don't do anything about it, it will get worse, then block completely.

Thanks Paul. Where do you think the blockage is - does it need a plumber or a drainage company. Is it worth trying that stuff I've seen mentioned on here - 'one shot ' is it?

Try a mop , one of the old shaggy dog types on a pole, perfect size to 'plunge' the bowl. Jam it in, fill bowl half up with water and plunge away... Saved a few people from brown shoes using that trick :)

It sounds to me like a syphonc toilet, and the syphonic action is not working. you maynot have a blockage
how long have you lived their and when did the problem start,
if its recently what happened before the problem

If it is flushing to a degree then I usually flush it and at the same time empty a builders bucket of water into the bowl. The objective is to get as much water pressure as possible bearing on the blockage.
Just need to be a bit controlled when emptying the bucket as you don't want to fill the bowl up.

Thanks to all, we will try all these things. I believe it is a symphonic system and the problems started about 2 or 3 weeks ago after there was a problem with the tank filling mechanism (it was filling extremely slowly). I have lived here about 7 years from new and never had a problem like this before

Can you post a photo of the toilet? If it is a syphonic and the cistern has been removed from the pan, it is vital it is reassembled correctly or it wont work!

thanks all, the toilet appears to be fixed - I think a combination of hot dishwasher detergent and plunging with a mophead, followed a few hours later with half a bath full of hot water being tipped down it!

Excellent, it's one of those tricks that when I saw it being used for the 1st time I said..."no frickin way that mop's going to work" but it does, every time I've had to use it :)

mop with a plastic bag over it is a good idea, I have had mop heads come off before. With a bag over the end you can pull it out easer if the head comes off .
