Hi.

Trying to install a ledgerboard in a highroofed garage to put in a floor for some extra storage but having trouble with getting the throughbolts to work properly. Worst still, yesterday I managed to blow out the back of the brick by hitting it too hard when installing it.

The wall is shared with my neighbour's garage so he's not too happy.

The garage is made of concrete blocks which are 100mm thick, and I'm using Fischer FXA 12/50 x 146 throughbolts to install a 9x2 ledgerbaord.

I'm drilling to a depth of 135mm (which includes the 45mm ledger), so I'm 85mm into the block, which to me seems a bit excessive being just 15mm to the other side.

I contemplated using the 12/30 x 126 version but my ledger is >30mm.

Also most of my bolts seem to be pulling out when I tighten them and not taking at all. The hole size is right and I'm cleaning them out but most just spin - any thoughts?

Are they Thermalite blocks? If so I think you'll struggle to grt a decent fix..

Edit.. Or see the other similar thread.

In that situation, resin-fixed bolts would probably be better.

On a separate note: if the wall is to support a floor and is only 100 block, will there not be a tendency for the wall to overturn? How is it fixed at the top?

Thanks tony.
I toyed with a chemical fix but then opted for through bolts. Lesson learnt.

The wall is part of the house on one side but the wall shared with the neighbour appears to be unsupported at the top just attatched to the front and back walls of the garage. I've got about 5 courses of blockwork above my desired floor level

appears to be unsupported at the top just attatched to the front and back walls of the garage.

Just be careful about how much you put on the floor and don't overload it. The fixings would probably be OK in themselves, it's the overall stability you need to be aware of.

Those blocks aren't Thermalite, and you should get a good fix with throughbolts. If your drill bits the right size, maybe go for a resin fix..

Just had a Structural engineer in to take a look at the above. He seems quite happy.

He's specified M10 Sleeve Anchors. Can someone point me in the direction of something suitable?? I've got a 47mm x 225mm ledger being attached into 100mm blocks and he's specified a minimum embedment of 50mm. Which of these would you suggest is best? http://www.screwfix.com/search.do?fh_search=sleeve+anchor&fh_view_size=20

I'm thinking I need a min of 100mm sleeve, so perhaps something like a fischer FSA 10 x 120mm - does that sound about right?
