What should I expect from a boiler service?

With respect, how the **** can anyone tell? - they won't be there when it's serviced. Unless of course you're lucky enough to stumble upon whoever's about to do it, on this forum.

Tougth question, I don't work for them

If it was an independent servicing your boiler, I would awnser that in the back of your installation manual you will have a service schedule and that should be carried out as instructed by the manufacture.

Search 26/9 checks, may be relevant

You could contact BG and ask them what che ms you can expect the engineer to carry out

dont BG carry out a "safety inspection" rather than a "service"?
im not trying to split hairs but ive read on here,by a bg engineer, thats what the fine print says

BG do a "generic"service.

A "service" is a gas burner pressure or a gas rat test. Also a flue gas analysis. If thes is within the required parameters - then that is job done. If not, it should be adjusted. Possible check on fitted magnetic filters (not on board filters)

THAT IS IT!! Contractors outside London are paid £20.02 INCLUDING all travel time and costs. So don;t be surprised when we are in and out in as quick a time as possible.

but a good independent will:

cleaning the condensate trap
checking the expansion vessel (year one)
checking the combustion
cleaning the heat exchanger
checking the filter (there should be one)
bleeding radiator
topping up pressure
help with and check programming and thermostat settings.

I sub to BG and do all of the above

On most boilers all this can be done with paper work in around 20-25 mins.
It does sometimes seem that not much is being done. But working efficiently will allow all this to be done.

You will find that some contractors and some direct labour for BG will do the minimum required. Which as said above is a couple of tests and a visual inspection.
Also some boilers (worcester for example) give instruction on a test that must be done, and if this reading is within the range req'd then there is no need to open and clean the heat exchanger.

Are you concerned the service hasn't been carried out correctly?
Or asking in advance so u know what should be done

Oh dear where do you start with that?

Most modern boilers need nothing for a service. Other than to check
that the boiler is burning correctly and that all combustion seals are in place.
A service will catch any problems early.

I did a gas check on a vaillant. The combustion chamber seal
had started leaking and the heat from the burner was happily making its way through the flue and air intake inside the boiler.
Only the outer case seal was preventing the boiler from killing
everyone in the house and it was just about to get to that.
A yearly gas check is adviseable. In the above case repairs of about £100. If the boiler had been left a month or two longer it would have been new boiler time.

A gas engineer should be able to tell if the boiler is safe in about 2-5 minutes.
