Hey all - slighly different question here!

I received a letter this week claiming to be from freedom-group – (supposedly working for Northern Powergrid).

The letter looks really suspicious – badly printed, poor English “call Erica on 07754……” (i.e. mobile not corporate numbers),trying to be over friendly, addressed to the “house holder” and describing very generic issues.

It’s the kind of thing I would normally throw straight in the bin.

However – I recently enquired with a Northern power grid engineer about having my meter board replaced as it has evidence of woodworm in it – so it’s a timely scam if it is one.

So – I was just wondering if any of the electricians on here have heard of Freedom group as a company linked to Northern Powergrid?

I’ll call the number on their website rather than Erica’s ‘personal’ number – but would be good to hear if it’s a familiar scam – or a trusted company that has no reliable proof-readers!!

Thanks

I've seen some quite dire English written by companies over the years. It's very common when putting a scam together to use the names of genuine companies, even doing some research to include a name of someone who does actually work for the company they say they are. I'd say the mobile phone is a dead give away. No company would ever do that. Also, if you suspect that it's a scam then it almost certainly is.

Freedom are genuine subcontractors for NPG and carry out routine jointing work for them.

It sounds like your job is the sort of thing they would be contracted to do.

Just the sort of company I'd claim to represent if I were running a scam.

"Hi, I'm from Lush Cosmetics, we've been contracted by your power company to carry out improvements works in your area" Not quite so convincing :)

I had a service head replaced by Stormport on behalf of WPD. They included details of the engineers name & mobile number to call them on to arrange the appointment.

hhhhmmm... Sounds like the jurys still out!

Would seem there is a genuine company operating under that name that do the type of work that may be contracted out by Northern Powergrid...

I'll give their main switch board a call and see if they have any idea what I am talking about!

Thanks for your advice

Interestingly – turns out that it is genuine!

Quick call to Northern Powergrid and Freedom (main switchboard from their website) – verified that the name and number is the engineers mobile phone!

It’s always best to check these things – this letter was dangerously close to going in the bin!
