Boiler/System noise

Hello!

I'm after some advice..

I've just moved into a new place and the boiler has been making some odd noises.. I'm hoping someone could take a listen and give me any ideas what's causing it. YouTube video here

It seems to be fine for an hour or two, then starts making a noise, like it's vibrating through the whole system. We have to turn the heating off and wait 10-15 minutes for the sound to disappear.

I've checked the pressure when it's doing it, it's not rising, but the needle is flickering fast between 1 & 2.

I've had the landlord come round and take a look - he says it all looks fine but probably just needs some 'additives' adding to the system. It's a pretty loud noise though, the neighbours have complained about it once already.

Anyone have any ideas?

Just to add - the video was taken by a radiator. Next to my bed.

Try sleeping next to that.

Sorry I don't know what is causing the fault (there are plenty more experienced people on here).

But... You have my sympathy. It must be driving you up the wall!

I'll hazard a guess at a chattering TRV. Thermostatic rad valve fitted incorrectly. Try adjusting TRV's (if you have any) when noise starts. There are other reasons why this noise is occurring, but start at the rad valves.

Bypass valve is shunting, check minimal by pass pumped flow rate through boiler and ensure by pass rate is adjusted accordingly, do this with all rads turned off first then try opening furthest rad just enough to test if bypass activates.

As its a rented property I would suggest you limit what you do to the system to what you feel capable of. Checking and setting bypasses (if there is one) is not for novices.
Your landlord won't be happy if you cause damage.

The boiler is an Ideal Logic Combi 30 boiler. I've attached an image for you to see the valves.

I have absolutely no idea when it comes to boilers, just enough to be a little wary of them, so again, any advice is much appreciated.

Hifty, your photo shows only the boiler connections - but no valve.

A manual bypass would be a pipe with a valve somewhere between the flow pipe (1 with gauge) and c/h return pipe (5) in photo , it would generally be not far from the boiler (low level) maybe, i doubt you have one.

There is no integral auto bypass in the Logic Combi 30 boiler.

A radiator with no TRV used continually could in effect be a bypass - i doubt you have one.

Your boiler needs a bypass if there are any zone valves on system pipework or there are TRV's fitted to all rads.

If the culprit noisy rad (per the Youtube vid) has a TRV - as a temporary experiment, try to remove the head only which should let the rad stay open permanently and see if the noise reduces or goes quiet completely - trying this on other rads might also help.

Loose jumper on a lockshield valve.

While its making the noise, go around and turn all of the radiators to fully closed and fully open, and one of them will stop the noise.

It may help to remove all of the white plastic covers on the lockshields, before you start, and have a pair of pliers, grips or a small spanner to work the valve spindles.

Dont play with boiler, as its not yours and may be under a warranty.
The boiler has a built in bypass.

The radiator in the front room was off, when i turned it on - the noise stopped.
So, my next question... Does this need fixing or will it be ok if i just leave it on?

The valve should be replaced, which would not be much of a challenge, for someone who knows what they are doing.
