Hi, I'm afraid I've have had a couple of very poor experiences with heating engineers previously (yes even Gas Safe registered ones).

So, I'd like to know what general tasks should be included when a boiler service is carried out?

Please note that I am not asking for advice on how to carry out these tasks, and have no intention of trying myself. I will get a Gas Safe registered engineer to do it.

But I do want to be able to understand a summary of what I am asking them to do, and for me to be able to intelligently ask the result of each task they should have carried out.

Specifically I have a Potterton Profile 60e, with ignition problems, and plan to get it serviced at the same time as the repair.

Thanks in advance.

A service is likened to an MOT, or safety test, soon as you drive off the forecourt it can breakdown.

What did they do and what were you expecting would be better questions.

rcssmb & MIGEM thanks very much for those links. They make perfect sense, and are just what I needed to give me an overview of what tasks they should carry out, so I can discuss them up front with the engineer and ask about their results.
