Getting the first course built in normal mortar spot on is the key.

And some systems have little shims you can use to tweak the blocks if they go slightly off.

I think I will need them, I ordered the tools from Tackburn last night very helpful.

Does anyone know the answer to the following I have called trying to get some prices of blocks and been told by two people now that all Thermalite blocks are ok to be used with thin joint system ?

It's just I have a local builders merchant who although are not very knowledgable they are cheap. The answers about the blocks were not from them.

I thought the point was you could use those huge jumbo blocks to make it even quicker?

yes that's my idea, I dont have much leave left at work so want to build the single storey extension to the building in a weekend. Building control want it as single skin so i will use the thick blocks 215mm deep and approx 300mm high to go quick.

But some people say the blocks need to be made for thin joint others say thermalite are ok.

The blocks used for thin joint systems need to be really accurate, so check with the manufacturer which are suitable.

I suppose if it's only single storey he might get away with it, but really if you end up with normal breeze blocks you're running the risk it won't be straight AND you're missing the time saving benefit of buying those huge thin-joint blocks where you basically lay two and the extension's finished.

Yes fair point both of you, I will speak to the Hanson's today who make the blocks and see the price difference is as yes if it takes me twice as long I have wasted the efforts of going thin joint in the first place.

The thin joint system has been popular in Europe for a long time, but if you have never used it before you might find it takes a lot longer than you thought.
The first time I used it was back in the early 70's in Belgium. The English lads I was working with hadn't used it either, so the first course wasn't spot on, and the higher the wall went the worse it got. There was bits of cardboard, old fag packets etc. in the wall to try and straighten it up.
One thing I did learn with the 10inch wide blocks when running the line was to use a boat level across the blocks to keep them spot on. This made laying the next one above much easier.

Great thanks I have seen so many utube clips the people on my train are starting to think I am wierd. One thing I had worked out yes first course needs to be 100% perfect. I have got the sanding rasp and the block rasp also so intend to get it right.

Thanks for the advice.

I have ordered the thermalite blocks but can't find the mortar anywhere anyone got any ideas where I can get it
