If you have one of the two part "NTE5" master sockets then remove the lower half and plug your phone into the test socket. If you use plug in extensions remove them.

If after doing that you still have the problem (which you almost certainly will) then it's time to call your phone service provider and complain.

Thanks plugwash I tried that and the socket is two part and connected in to the test socket and as you said still not working, silly question but why do I still have the internet working but not the phone thanks regards bazz

It's the way the two signals are sent down the line you can have broadband but no phone.

If you have fibre then the phone and broadband are combined in the box not the exchange, but even non fibre you can lose the phone only.

I am a little bit wiser now thanks to you both for taking the time to help I bought another phone today but still no line, but as you say now call bt they wanted £129.00 just for the call out if it wasn't their fault, so had to be sure thanks again bazz

ADSL can still perform with a break in one conductor of the twisted pair, or a high resistance joint, due to the high frequency it operates on. The phone side can't.

Use a plug in corded phone (NOT cordless) and plug it into test socket. If you still have no phone then it is an Openreach free repair as problem must be in their equipment.
