Hey guys,

I'm looking to fix my dads old pillar drill.

The problem is, the start capacitor is missing off the back of it, and we have no idea what size it needs to be. It's just got 2 wires hanging out the back of it.

I don't suppose anyone knows how to work out what size it would need to be?

Its a NuTool 1/2hp motor.

Any help would be great, google isn't any help :(

cheers

I doubt that will fix it. I think it just helps cut down the interference. NuTool are only DIY stuff anyway. It's probably the windings that are shot.

Disconnect the belts then tie your left hand behind your back and then spin the pulley free handed with your right hand and then hit the on switch.
If it starts the capacitor is to blame.
You won't be burned alive, won't lose an arm or need a five man air born medic team on stand by if you do it this way.

.....And then if it does start, get a 65 to 80 uf 440volt capacitor. :D

Hell back to uni :p
Could that be a 1425 rpm brushless motor.....the start cap will be in the region of 40uf with an appropriate working voltage. The cap wont be polarised.
Some had a run cap too, with a much higher uf rating. Some bigger motors had a start and run cap combined.
The motor could start with a spin but it would get up to speed slowly and the start winding would then disengage centrifugally.
John :)
