Hi,

I have recently fitted a door entry system to a front door, but need to make the door unable to be opened from the outside without the use of a key. It also needs to be able to be deadlocked from inside and outside.

At present, both the inside and outside handles open the door. I understand this to be a lever/lever system. I think that I require a lever/paddle system which would mean purchasing new handles. What I'm not sure about is the spindle and and locking mechanism. I'm pretty sure you can't just change the handles and be done with it, it would need a 'split-spindle'? I have also heard it may need the complete locking mechanism (deadlocking) replaced?

I would be most grateful if someone could clear this up for me and advise where I can purchase the required parts. I have attached photos if it helps.

Thanks.

Give your local upvc window an door company a call they will be able to supply what you need

Take the handle off, If there are 2 spindle holes the gearbox is suitable for lever/pad and will only need a new handle and spindle.

If not you will need a new gearbox as well. Take out the locking system and take measurements and photos of everything also look for names/makes and any part codes.

These are the sort of measurements you will need:

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, it was very helpful.

I'm pretty sure the lock only has 1 spindle hole. Can I not just use a 'split-spindle' to achieve what I need? How do I tell?

Thanks.

To be honest Im not sure how your door entry system is set up so hard to advise.

Without the correct gearbox you would not be able to engage/disengage the multipoint locking from the outside. If thats ok you could just cut the spindle so it dosent reach the outside handle (assuming the key will operate the latch, Some dont).

Hi,

The entry system just releases an electric latch (strike) where the door catch is.

I need it so the deadlock still works from both sides so cutting the spindle is no good. How can I tell if the gearbox will take a split spindle or if its just for a single solid spindle.

If this is communal door then you should not be able lock it from the inside.
Fire regulations.

No, it's a front door to a private house, the owner is disabled and needs a way to let callers in.
