My garage doors are the standard swing-out slatted softwood type. At the moment they are attached by three rather insubstantial strap hinges. It would be a simple matter for a fairly determined thief just to undo the screws and help himself. And yet, looking at other garages, I'm surprised how many have the doors simply attached by simple external hinges.

My question is, is it viable to use concealed hinges on this kind of door, or does the width of the door make it impractical? Otherwise, what to people do about this situation? Upgrade the hinges / drill out the screw slots? Or just ignore it, no thief would go to that kind of trouble?

Use at least one coach bolt per hinge. Bolted all the way through, then there is nothing to unscrew.
