Opening oven door trips rcd

I've got an electrician coming on Friday, but would welcome any thoughts before then.

Last night I opened my built in electric oven door and the house power tripped. I took the bulb out (it comes on when the door's opened) but this made no difference. It then got worse and was tripping the electric again a few seconds after re-setting the rcd. I turned the oven off at the wall. I've not turned the oven on at any point and the separate rcd that is supposed to be a breaker between the oven and main circuit box isn't preventing it happening.

Nothing else is tripping the electric.

Any ideas as to what this might be and whether fixable in theory? Thanks a lot.

probably a fault around the door switch.

The breaker is an MCB for over current protection
and bigger RCD does earth leakage.

They perform different tasks which is why only 1 is tripping

Removing the lamp won't make any difference if the fault lies with the interior lamp circuit itself.

Opening the door will still close the circuit and introduce a fault which trips the RCD.

Many thanks also for this. Are both these faults easy to repair? It'll cost me £88 just to have the oven electrician step on my doorstep so would like to hope its cost effective.

If its £88, they then find fault, will they have spares with them or need to order parts?, if ordering parts will there be additional labour charge to fit new parts when they arrive?, so which is cheaper, new oven or labour x 2? & parts.

You don't need an electrician, you need a service engineer for the brand of oven you have.

However if its a cheapy (Hotpoint, Creda or similar), probably worth replacing it!

Yes. Just double check the "electrician" can service the oven and if he can, is he able to fault-find and repair in one visit?

If not, you need to weight the cost of two visits against the cost of a replacement, especially, as has been said, if your model is at the lower end of the price range and/or elderly.
