Rear garden is currently turfed but we had a nightmare this winter with all the rain, the garden was a bit of a swamp (clay soil) and the dog brought most of it in the house! So we are looking for alternatives.....gravel or mulch aren't really an option as the dog would probably eat it!

If we go for paving the ground slopes towards the house by a good 6 inches so that would need digging out to level it off. Initial inquiries suggest several thousand pounds to pave it!

Any ideas appreciated :D

It's 46m2 total inc area already paved in front of door. The highest point is at the back fence by the swing. It slopes down from there to the door about 6"

Requirements are nowhere for dog to get muddy and an area big enough for table and chairs to dine out in summer.

Had a think last night about maybe decking a third of the way from the house and pave the rest but let it slope to a soakaway just before deck starts?

Personally i hate decking and try and steer customers off it all the time. I would say at best 10% of decks still look good after 3 years.

Paving will be more expensive though. If i were you i would pave half and atrificial grass the rest.

Drainage isn't a major problem as your garden is small enough that you should be allowed drain surface water into the mains stormwater system.
