Hi,

I need advice on removing this beast of a fireplace. We are planning to remove the bricks and get a plasterer to smooth over the sides before we decide on a new fireplace surround.
Do you think we can remove the bricks ourselves? Real careful? We want to make sure that the chimney isn't coming down on us.
Thank you!

The fireplace and brick surround will not be part of the chimney structure.
Messy job, but a hammer and chisel will sort it out a lot quicker than you think. Get some dust sheets to cover carpet and any furniture you cannot remove from room and plenty of rubble sacks.
Chisel out a row at a time at mortar joints and you will be surprised how quickly the removal is, and also how much you actually end up shifting.

Thank you very much for the advice. We are now confident enough to do it ourselves rather than paying someone :D

Goggles, large chisel, small chisel, maybe a breaking bar, job done :)

And over-estimate the rubble bags, I am always amazed how much I end up with!

And don't forget to protect yourself! So safety footwear, quality work gloves, dust mask and safety specs, possibly knee pads.

The tools I use when removing fire surrounds such as yours are very basic, you don't normally require any power tools, a couple masonry chisels, one large and one small (4" and 1/2") should do and 4lb lump hammer. The addition of a small/medium demolition bar could also come in useful.
