Some 200 ish subways sandwich outlets have switched to selling halal meat only due to high pressure from muslims. I don't have an issue with peoples religious beliefs or their choice of what they eat. I am a little uneasy with what I have read, rightly or wrongly, about the halal method of slaughter, but that aside would it have not been better to offer a halal option, rather than having a Gerald Ratner moment?

I'll never use them again. I'd rather go hungry.

I don't use them anyway but I would say it is a business decision rather than pressure.

Personally, I eat meat that has been killed in number of ways, shot, from angling , trad butcher. I have seen pigs hung upside down with the blood collected for pudding as their throat is slit. Some of it I have no idea how it is actually slaughtered. As long as it is hygienic and done quickly, it's not an issue for me.

Halal and kosher is a load of nonsense to me as regards being 'clean' or words being said as the animal is killed.

If you don't believe in Islam then does Halal actually mean anything?

Do you have a link to your source infromation, else it looks like it's a misrepresentation of facts.
I assume you have your information from the DM.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...res-strong-demand-Muslims-eat-Halal-meat.html

Which says that 185 outlets are selling halal products. So are you exaggerating the DM article?

But it looks like the DM is misrepresenting facts again:
Due to the growing popularity of the SUBWAY® chain, with the diverse multicultural population across the UK and Ireland, we put a programme in place in 2007 to ensure that the population demographic is taken into account when new store openings are considered in order that we meet consumer demand in each location.

All our suppliers comply with EU animal welfare legislation as a minimum and we require suppliers of Halal products to adopt the stunning of animals prior to their slaughter. All Halal meats are certified by the appropriate Halal authorities.
All Halal SUBWAY® stores have numerous signs stating that they serve Halal food. These are situated on the menu panels, nutritional information and in the front window of the store.

What is Halal?
In Arabic, the word Halal means "permitted" or "lawful" and defines anything that is allowed or lawful according to the Qur'an. It is often used in the context of food - especially meat - to indicate that the food has been prepared in accordance with Muslim principles and techniques.

Do all SUBWAY® stores serve Halal meats?
No. Only a limited number of SUBWAY® stores serve Certified Halal meats.

When will people learn to question the garbage that the DM chucks out?

Apart from that, if you're a non-believer, what does it matter? Please note the highlighted part from their website.

BTW, there are 1400 outlets in UK and Ireland:

So what's the big deal?

I don't eat meat.

That's fair enough. Is that because of moral objections or because you don't like the taste of meat? Do you eat fish/seafood? Drink milk? Have leather shoes?

Hand on heart I am not spoiling for a disagreement, just curious.

Like SS, I don't eat much meat. Not a religious or moral decision, I just hate fat and gristle!

However, I shall never use Subway again on principle. Perhaps this is the thin edge of the wedge. Wasn't a major supermarket also planning to offer only halal meat, whether people want it or not?

Perhaps we indigenous whites are now a persecuted minority, at least in all but name. Isn't this the equivalent of demanding that muslims eat pork?

Yet another example of a backward religion imposing it's cruel, medieval methods on a once civilised society.

Won't affect me anyway, because Subway food looks like rubbish. Low quality bread and cheap ingredients. Don't know what all the fuss is about. Just seems like McDonalds, but selling baguettes, not burgers.

Follwers of The R O P - the halal Meatball Marinaras are all yours. Somehow, I think you deserve each other.

As usual, coathanger is trying to downplay the real situation. I think people would be surprised to know how much halal there is out there in supermarkets, takeaways and school meals.

Won't really affect me either, both subway and maccy d's give me really bad gut ache.

If you google it, you will see that there are several news sources with the same information, not just the DM.

I went veggie in 1991 for health reasons mainly, but also for welfare. However, since then, I have discovered I have overcome my lifelong allergy to fish so I do eat some fish.

I eat dairy too. Leather I only buy if there is no other alternative.

There's some really dopey plonkers out there, making some really dopey comments, except, of course, their comments are really motivated by racism.
Lets look at a couple of those comments.
/........ I shall never use Subway again on principle. Perhaps this is the thin edge of the wedge. Wasn't a major supermarket also planning to offer only halal meat, whether people want it or not?
Yet another example of a backward religion imposing it's cruel, medieval methods on a once civilised society.
What utter absurd comments.
Subway made a decision to offer an alternative to its usual food. It made a business desicion based on demand at 185 (out of 1400) outlets.
Lets also not forget that all Subway outlets are a franchise and if the original owners didn't want to offer Halal meat, I'm sure a) they would have a choice, but chose the right business desicion, and b) they could have withdrawn their support for the franchise.
If some Subway outlets started to offer sugarless fruit drinks , due to demand would the above two posters object on the basis that our country was being taken over by some religion or other.
How ludicrous!

Then they go on to say that it doesn't bother them anyway:
Like SS, I don't eat much meat. Not a religious or moral decision, I just hate fat and gristle!
Won't affect me anyway, because Subway food looks like rubbish. Low quality bread and cheap ingredients. Don't know what all the fuss is about. Just seems like McDonalds, but selling baguettes, not burgers.

Then they resort back to their diatribe against Muslims, just to make sure we've got their message of hate:
Perhaps we indigenous whites are now a persecuted minority, at least in all but name. Isn't this the equivalent of demanding that muslims eat pork?
Follwers of The R O P - the halal Meatball Marinaras are all yours. Somehow, I think you deserve each other.

I often wonder if Whiteshite and RBJ are really prophets of the Religion of Hate.

Whiteshite then tries to suggest that my mention of 185 outlets out of 1400 is an attempt to downplay the situation. The numbers do that. Not to mention the demand and the business desicion.
As usual, coathanger is trying to downplay the real situation.

Then he comes out with another wierd and wild statement. Why doesn't he tell us instead of making devious and sinuous implications
I think people would be surprised to know how much halal there is out there in supermarkets, takeaways and school meals.

Then they thank each other for their dopey comments.

Most people who eat meat from supermarkets have eaten Halal meat
