Looking for some advice please

Last week I had a new mono block drive put down.
Neither myself nor my husband know anything about this is done.
My husband asked the boss of said company how much hard core he
would be putting down (someone told my husband to ask this)
The boss of the company told him we didn't need any as they had drilled down quite deep in our drive and there was quite a lot of hard core there so it wasn't necessary to lay any more.
The day after the job was finished we noticed the hadn't put a piece of edging down at the front of our garden.
We have phoned them several times to come back and finish job properly to no avail.
They also done my neighbours drive, but they did put hardcore down in their drive (just found this out tonight) but have to come back and put the sand down on neighbours drive.
Both ourselves and neighbours have phoned this company several times.

We are now wondering if it has been cowboys we have dealt with. I know no-one can answer that question for me, but can anyone tell me if I should have had hardcore laid on my drive?

Sorry for long post.

TIA

After they lifted existing slabs and digging out drive the builders laid a grey looking substance which I thought was a thin layer of concrete, they then put the bricks on top of this.
Both my husband and I thought hardcore looked like a form of rubble?

Have you got a written quote detailing the work to be done?
How did you pay for the work?
How did you find the company that did the work?
Do you have an invoice with full contact details on it - landline tel.no/address etc

Did they use a whacker plate (noisy thing that one man will push over the hardcore like a lawnmower to compress it)

Newboy, we paid cash for the work, we have an invoice stating what work they carried out. The workmen seemed nice enough to talk to. The invoice has a mobile tel no. on it and an address which we are going to check out.

What does the invoice state?
Approximately how large is the driveway?
How much did you pay?

Hardcore is not what you think. it looks like a grey or grey - pinkish material which is not unlike a coarse sand.

The proper make up of a block paved drive should be 150mm minimum of well compaacted hardcore. then 20-40mm of compacted screeded grit sand then the blocks.

your drive may have had adequate hardcore. what was the surface before?
