UV water filter: loft tank or not?

Hi. I'm looking at whole-house UV water filters and one major installation question I need to address is whether the filter would feed the house water system directly or if it will feed a storage tank in the loft that in turn feeds the house.

I'd prefer to use a storage tank, but I'm wondering if there are good reasons to avoid this?

and the obvious question - why do you need to fit "UV filters" to your supply?

Because the water supply comes straight off the hill, laden with all kinds of bacteria, sediment and unpleasantness. UV sterilisation with sediment pre-filtering is the way to go for this kind of thing. It's just a case of whether it is valid to store the filtered water in a buffer tank, and what risks that might introduce.

Well that seems like a good reason!

If you can be sure that the cistern is only used for non-potable water then I'd be inclined to fit filtration & sterilization equipment as close to point of entry as possible. The downside to stored water is the obvious opportunity for bacterial growth is it's left standing for any length of time at the right temperatures.
