Is cork suitable to use before filling gaps?

I've just installed some tongue and groove and wainscotting in our bedroom and the walls were pretty badly out in some places, requiring a fair bit of packing behind some of the batoning. There are a couple of really bad bits , e.g. the external angle on one side of an old blocked off chimney breast, where the wainscotting is sitting around 15mm off the edge of the wall.

Obviously, the gaps in these places are far too big to use flexible fillers etc, so can they just be packed out with some cork strips first and will the filler adhere to them afterwards? I am a bit lost what to do if not.

A lot of the "Old School" Decorators use Newspaper scrunched up in gaps and holes as a base for filler before decorating.

I`m Told page 3 of the Sun is particularly good for this purpose. ;)

 I was hoping for something a bit more permanent.

Once the filler goes off and hardens its permanent, the paper is just to hold the filler in place until it cures !

Just wondering if there has been any confusion between cork and caulk. Apologies if this isn't the case.

Cheers

No, I did mean cork strips as the gaps were so wide I couldn't think what else to wedge in there and give a permanent finish. :)

Anyway, I have tried the paper method and it seems to be holding up fine so far, thanks. The flexible filler is still wet slightly to the touch so it will be a little while before I can paint yet.
