Help needed! Problem with brown toilet water

This sounds disgusting but the water in my toilet turnsbrown when left for a few hours. It's not coming from the tank, there is a layer of clear water above the brown stuff in the pan of the toilet- if that makes sense! Help!!

It does go when flushing but builds back up a couple of hours later

How long has this been happening? If recent then it's possible there is some waste matter stuck in the 'U' bend, a good cleaning with plenty of water and a decent bog brush may solve the problem.

Give it a dose of ONE SHOT drain cleaner if it's an organism causing this the product should kill it.

someone hasn`t passed a nut have they ? Not a peanut , a 1/4 inch whitworth one that`s rusting away in the trap
