Hi

Does anybody have any suggestions as to how I can cut through wood silently??? The wood is approx. 4" x 4".

Thanks

Depends how you want to cut it :)

Wire saws are very quiet :) compared to other forms.

Pop it on the space shuttle and put your workmate out on the wing

Thanks for the replies.

I'm just doing a bit of DIY and need to be able to do it late into the evening, as I've got to fit it around long hours at work, but my neighbours are the type with a glass to the wall waiting for the slightest little noise to complain about.

How effective would a wire saw be at cutting through a length of 4" x 4" timber?.....Are wire saws a lot quieter than normal saws then?

Thanks

Use a power tool and do it quickly.

If your not working past 11PM and its only an occasional thing and does not go on too long then just do it.

You could plan the day so you cut the wood early though.

How are you fixing it - "no nails"? lol

Using a nice new sharp handsaw will make little noise the noise will come from the viabrations transmited through the bench / table you are working on try a folded blanket on the workmate or whatever you are using and an old rug underneath the feet.

what times are you talking about??

6-9 7-10 8-11??

what are you building??

best plan off action
plan the lengths you need to cut
cut them enmasse as early as possible
assemble with a screwdriver

Just tell the neighbours you have work to do, give them the option of a few time windows, and get it done. You have a right to make some noise as required for maintaining your house. One day they will need to do the same.

This.

Even the wall they've got the glass up against was built by stout arms among a noisy building site at one time...

I'd rather hear a power saw for 30 minutes, than someone trying to be quiet with a handsaw off and on for hours at a time.

timber mills will only cut to within a certain tolerance, so it depends what he's making.
