Ive just discovered that my cooker isolation switch also cuts off the power to a single socket above the kitchen wall units. What would that usually be used for? I have a separate socket that would be used for the cooker hood which operates independently.

cheers

It is common to find where a gas cooker has been installed that some one uses the cooker supply for other things.

Since in general you don't switch off the cooker isolator both because it stops the clock and it also stops cooling fans so cupboards could over heat either side of the cooker having the odd socket connected to cooker supply is really not a problem in fact many isolators included a socket.

The same happens to immersion heater supply where a combi boiler has been fitted often the switches and FCU get swapped for sockets.

It could have been designed for fridge freezer as it was common to feed cooker and fridge freezer with non RCD protected supplies. However today that means using special cable so no longer done.

Im looking to install a new kitchen and looking at options for plugging things in.

I have 2 ovens at 3,500w and 3,600w that I believe I can hard wire to the cooker point that is already in situ.; I then have a hob that is rated 2,900 and has a uk 13 amp plug ( yes it does Bosch do one). Would it be safe to use this socket for the hob?

Depends on the route that the flex would have to take, but even if it were safe it would look incredibly naff.

Why spend money on a new kitchen and then have a flex trailing up the wall?

Spend a bit on the electrics.

What special cable?
