There is 3 to 4 well known born complainers that have put in an application to join our social sport club as they have been booted out from their own club. Is there anything we can do to stop them for joining our club as some of our members are threatening to leave?

Look up the constitution of the club. It might say that people can apply for election to membership. It might say who elects them, e.g. the committee or the members. It might say that provisional membership (e.g. 3 months) has to be ratified.
It might say that the committee has the power to decide matters not specified otherwise in the constitution.
If there isn't a constitution, get one. You might have to call an EGM or an AGM for the members to vote on adopting it.

Yes it's in the constitution but we got to prove it!
Really need to get the character reference from their old club but they are not going to do a bad reference on them because they are only too pleased to get rid of them!
