I have an unending problem with painted bathroom surfaces (shelves, ledges) where I place shampoos, shower gels and so on. As far as bottles of Dettol and the like are concerned, I've just had to resort to keeping them on the floor. Standard gloss and one-coat paints scarcely last a few months in tact and diamond-hard kitchen and bathroom paint is no complete solution. I've looked all through the Internet and, ununderstandable to me, nobody seems to offer a discussion of this problem.

Some of the surfaces are very narrow and none of them are particularly large so I'm not sure tiling would look right. I've thought of floor paint but obviously don't want to buy 2.5l for surface areas totaling less than a square metre, particularly if won't be much better than what I've tried before.

I've just applied some gloss paint from a tin I wanted to finish up and am wondering about allowing it to cure and applying varnish. I'm wondering which varnish or if there isn't something better altogether (other than tiling).

I would have thought a plastic/melamine/glass or stainless steel tray would do otherwise a upvc trim fixed to the top with blobs of silicone would do fine.
No paint will ever stand up to constant damp containers left on it.

Have a google for upvc trims loads of types out there one example here.

had a upvc window sill in my last bathroom and it was fine for 15 years before I moved.

Possibly I'd have the same problem with a tray and I'd have to fully seal a piece of uPVC for the same reason.

Do you include varnish when you say "No paint..."? Pretty much my experience with household paints. But I was thinking surely yacht varnish must stand up to wet and moisture, and then I thought what about marine paint. I've used neither varnish nor marine paint before.

I can't say I am that impressed by Yacht varnish I think it is overrated, seen it peel and flake on outside window frames and it is not designed to be soaked all the time. I suspect the Yacht varnish DIY stores sell is not the same as the stuff the multimillionaires have on their floating pleasure palaces though! And they have a flunky to polish it all day long!

Give it a try by all means but replace the wood panel to ensure it is totally dry before you apply the varnish. ;)
