Hi
Does anyone out there have any experience of getting rid of moles from a lawn?
If so I would be very pleased to hear what they did and how it worked. Thanks!

well, the standard methods are :-

Trapping.
Sonic repellers
MothBalls.

Only tried the trapping method, sort of worked ok, but I didn't bury the trap deep enough and it was the middle of winter..... sorry mr moley.. I never meant to freeze you to death. :(

I had one last year. Hes on facebook/youtube now.
I used a trap.
I have another one now, he just made a nice run under the carrots, lifted them all.

Tried putting mothballs down the hole. The usual result was a fresh pile of earth, with a mothball on top.

Tried one of those battery-powered vibraty things that you stick in the ground. Ended up with a neat ring of mole hills round it (moles won't go near vibration, which is why you never see molehills by the side of the road - durr).

Tunnel traps are very effective.

I've stopped using them now because I've given up killing things.

My neighbour is retired and has time on his hands. His method is to flood the mole out with a hose, and be ready to grab it when it emerges, spluttering, into the light (wear gloves).

You may find you only have one mole - they are antisocial bsggers and have extensive runs.

Well, I have been trying to get mothballs all day today - and can't get any anywhere. I have been told that they've not been available for 3 or 4 years due to some European law coming over decreeing that there is something in them that makes them harmful to moths!!!!!!!

Ah well, I don't want to kill them/it, so will have to think - unless anyone out there can tell me how to get hold of mothballs??!! ;)

I also tried flooding. But it would take you some time to wait and water to waste. but kinda effective.

Mothballs don't work.

The thing with flooding is that you do need to catch and relocate the mole. Otherwise it will immediately set to repairing its tunnels. Mole hills are the spoil from tunnelling, which is why you see more after heavy rain, because tunnels have collapsed and Moley has had to repair them.

Remember that a mole's tunnels are like a spider's web - the mole patrols them to find the food that has crawled or fallen into them.

Hmmmmmm, I have a sneaky suspicion that I'm going to have to learn to live with the little blighter!
Thanks everyone for your comments!

Somebody I knew used to be good at driving moles away. His method was to find a run and carefully push a bamboo cane through the soil until he could feel the end break into the mole's tunnel. Then dribble in a few spoonsful of old engine oil and cover it up. Moles have a very sensitive smell, so when they get a whiff they clear off and play somewhere else. Can't remember what the chap's name was.

Wouldn't it just dig a small bypass? ;)

Have a go at trapping, there are humane traps available...... just remember to dig the trap well into the tunnel, wear gloves, otherwise it'll smell you, then cover the trap up well, so as not to freeze the poor blighter in case of cold weather  inspect the trap everyday, if caught, take said mole a long way away (couple of miles) and release.

Moles need to eat every couple of hours, or they can starve to death. Unless you can inspect them that frequently, humane mole traps are the *least* humane way to deal with moles.
