Read a lot on here about sealing external brickwork with waterproof stuff (the clear brick sealant stuff)

As I understand it, the general consensus is that it external brickwork shouldn't be sealed or painted as it prevents the brick from breathing and, if there is still damp in the bricks, there will be nowhere for it to escape.

I understand that from the point of view of a single brick wall but may I please ask if the same goes for a cavity wall.

In short, if you have a double skin of brickwork with a cavity wall in between is it okay to seal the exterior brickwork with the stuff?

Thanks in advance.

I've used it on Northumbrian sandstone (notoriously porous) and it was a bloomin' lifesaver.....it soaks into the outer leaf and stops there, repelling the rain.
I wouldn't hesitate to use it again, and the bricks / blocks can nicely breathe to the cavity.

Thanks Burnerman.

Any recommendations for a clear waterproofer?

The common one is Johnstones Water Seal, no doubt there are others.
I don't know what they are chemically but seem to be silicone based and have been for absolutely ages. I can remember first using the stuff about 45 years ago!
