is this a job too big for filler?

What is the state of the timber is it rotten? If it is then it needs replacing , if not you may very well get away with screwing it back together with probably a ply "plate" on the back before trying to fill. Just filling it as it is would most likely be a waste of time and effort.

thanks LL.

it has rotted, and the rotted bits I've pulled out. what remains is fairly sound.
yes, was thinking a wooden plate bolted to the back, to give the filler a 'base'...

and am assuming I would need to build up filler very gradually..

If you use an epoxy filler (2-part) such as sold by Ronseal you can fill as big a gap as you want since it does not rely upon air evaporation to cure. If the gap is quite wide I'd suggest you (a) push in some thin strips of wood and (b) screw in some screws to to provide an anchor for the compound to grab onto.
