bottle trap won't seal

hi all , bought a 32 mm bottle trap for my new vanity basin ,
the waste is one of those pop up jobs, anyway the bottle keeps leaking out of the thin rubber washer on the top of the bottle trap ,
any suggestions appreciated

Are you sure that there is enough space for the backnut on the trap to fully tighten - it's not reaching the backnut on the waste is it?

Make sure that the neck of the trap sits inside the waste and that the washer is seated against the flange of the trap before tightening up the backnut

If that fails then either replace the washer/o ring or get another trap

If the leak is below the backnut then it's the trap if it's above the backnut then it's usually the waste
 
I'd go with newboy's suggestion. Quite a few times I've had to cut 3mm or so off the nut on the trap. It seems that these pop up wastes have very short threads.
 
Plenty of space there then!

Wind the backnut off
Check that the seal is square and intact
Make sure that the top of the trap sits inside the waste
Hold in position
tighten backnut
 
already done all those checks , thanks newboy ,
i'll get trap changed tomorrow & see if that helps
 
If I'm not mistaken that looks to be a cheapie Screwfix or similar. I've tried them on a couple of occasions and they can be buggers to seal.

Go out and buy a McAlpine one and you will have no problems.
 
I'll second that. The cheap S/fix traps are often carp, I've had several that wouldn't seal for toffee, swapped for McAlpine equivalent and that sealed first time!

I rememeber taking one back as the nut pulled of the trap body with minor pressure. Asked if they had many problems with these traps and the chap said no never. Minute later as they are still serving me another man comes in with the exact same trap with the exact same problem :mrgreen:
 
They tightened, but whatever I did, I simply couldn't get it to seal. I wasn't resorting to PTFE with brand new waste and trap, shouldn't have to. Didn't mess about 2nd time, trap went straight back and got changed! I've not bought the cheap ones since. ;)
