xfactor alternative

I'm just old enough to remember the Beatles when they first hit the big time. (I was still only a kid though.) You couldn't turn on the radio or the telly without there being something about them on. They were sort of everywhere somehow. Can't remember anything so big since. It was the time when the monochrome 50s finally turned into the technicolor 60s somehow.

I'm not that bothered about the music though apart from for the nostalgia. :)

XFactor, the dancing thing, and all those other "popular" programs mostly leave me cold. Listening to almost any pre 1985 music has to be better. . .

From The Beatles to Don Estelle in the same thread, at least we're getting better

Yes. Mid 80s is exactly the time that I always thought music went downhill, with few exceptions.

Me too. In music quizzes, I can normally answer questions on music 10 years before I was born, up until about '85, then that's it.

I'm not sure if its because my memory is getting worse or because.....er......erm.......?

I think I realised in about 1986 that all quality music had been made when dross like Five Star started becoming popular. At the time, I remember looking incredulously at a bloke at work, who was the same age as me, who told me he was into Five Star and was hoping to see them live. It was a turning point that just went downhill from there.

Must admit that I tend to look as far back as the 50s for music. Now, if only I could remember where I put the handle to wind up my gramophone.

It's been notable for me that in the last decade or so, I've seen my three children go through their teens and early twentees, with probably 75% of what they've been 'into', being pretty much the music of MY youth !!!

How on earth does that work?

I couldn't imagined me in my teens and earl twentees being in the slightest bit interested in very much that was around over thirty years before I was even born.

My son is well into pink Floyd now...not my cup of tea but at least they are real artists ... rather than some teenage boys /girls playing no instruments just looking pretty, twirling around and pointing their finger saying I love you oooooooohhhhhhhhh girl and then getting to no1 in the plastic charts
