I got someone round to service my boiler (12 year old, wall mounted).

Should they take the cover off and clean it out, or it is enough to stick a gas analyzer in the flu and determine that its working fine and efficient ?

If that's all that was done then it was not serviced. How is it possible to check the condition of the internal components without seeing them? You've been short changed my friend.

Thanks. Thought so.

There was me worried I would get charged for parts I didn't need, but when you can get money for not getting your hands dirty its even better!

Download the installation manual for the boiler, in there will be a section on servicing detailing the steps required.

If it was a national company it may very well be a 'safety inspection' or words to that effect, not a service. They follow their own (much less thorough) checklist of things they have to do. I think in some cases it probably is possible to complete this without the cover off, but it will be to the very minimum required.

Out of interest how much did you pay, and how long was he there for?

I requested a service.

It was a local company. The owner could well be ok, just the more junior members of staff trying it on.

Was only here 30 mins or so.

I haven't paid.

I would get the manual up and check service procedure, mention it to the company and see what he says. If there unwilling just withhold payment. There's no way you can do a service without the casing off.

30 minutes is a long time if you're not even taking the case off, but a service can be carried out in that time if that's all you do all day, are familiar with the model boiler, and don't like small talk/tea or coffee.

Also I think it's a bit unfair to blame the junior member. I'm willing to bet this is what he's been told to do by the boss, who will of course say the exact opposite if you question him! He's learnt to do it from someone after all.

Depends on the boiler.Opening up a combustion chamber unnecessarily can throw combustion readings totally off.

I assumed he meant the outer case , not the combustion chamber door/panel/case. If it's an older Vaillant I always take the combustion panel off as well to check insulation panels are in good condition.

Even the outer cover didn't come off.

Makes u wonder if he's gas safe approved.
He's not listed as approved under the company I called.
Cleaver not breaking that rule!

I ALWAYS take outer cover off and inspect inside, the combustion cover depends on the manufacturer, if he opens it he MUST replace the door seal, i only do this if i service the boiler yearly so i know the history. If its the first visit i check co/co2 and flame pic, if its ok i wouldn't waste your £30 on a seal unnecessarily. No excuse for not removing the outer cover though, there could be a drip inside slowly rotting the case.

A 14 year old vaillant might not require a door seal to be replaced when opening the combustion cover, but there really is no excuse for not taking the outer case off.

Did he issue paperwork with the engineers name on, and their gas safe number. If he isn't listed under the gas safe number get in touch with Gas Safe immediately.

If it's a non registered person it's gone beyond just a **** poor service and they are breaking the law.

As he didn't remove the cover or issue any paperwork I don't think he has broken any rules ! As I said cleaver!

Then I would just chalk it up to experience, don't pay them a penny and leave as many bad reviews as you can online/talking to people. Bad news always travels much quicker than good .
