Hi chaps.

I'm really struggling to fit a reasonable architrave to one of the doors.

The reason is that I cannot fit a full width of architrave (70mm) and so have to strip down the width of it to approximately 30mm (not much).

I understand the usual method, and this is what I do:

  • use set square to run 6mm around perimeter of door lining

offer head rail and mark on wall

offer side rail and mark, then cut and fit

    repeat for other side rail

offer head rail to wall and mark on where the cuts are and then cut and fit head plate

    done

What I don't understand is that by cutting the architrave in half suddenly doing the above results in a bizarre misconfiguration and the profile no longer matches up.

This is because obviously one width is different to the other but even using a bevel I am getting strange errors.

I am hoping there is a method to overcome this problem ?

Thanks guys

Also in this instance I can't recess the architrave into the wall because it butts up to another architrave of an adjacent door

ARghh did some routing about and came across this thread :

//www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=243623

exactly what I was after.

Seems the procedure is the reverse of normal,

so start by cutting the header with 45 degree mitres and THEN mark the side rails accordingly and make cuts.

This is totally counter-intuitive for me , sorry to say I've messed up a few trying to get it right.

Few quid wasted, never-mind, onwards and upwards

I'm assuming that you are trying to cut a mitre across the full width of both pieces and you are finding the mouldings are not lining up? If that is the case you'll be better off keeping the cuts closer to 45* . This will give you a square cut across 40mm of the head piece.

Edit
Seem to have been writing at the same time so didn't see your last post.

Yup got it now, shame I've wasted 2 lengths @ 2.1m and a header but hey ho, firewood I guess lol
