Hi

I've read a lot of stuff incl lots of threads on this forum but not come across this idea so I'm assuming its probably not a good idea....

Anyway, seems to me the main benefit of powerflush over mains flush is that with powerflush the water stays hot and you can control how much chemicals and flushing takes place. With a mains flush you just get cold water at pressure.

So, my idea on my open vented system is to get the water hot and circulating using CH pump as normal then to open a downstairs drainoff with the water still circulating and boiler on (max temperature). I would ensure the flow on downstairs drain is less than the flow from the header tank so that overall no air gets into the system. I'd force water through individual rads as normal as I'm going it. Then finally would give each rad a mains flush.

A waste of time? Even dangerous? Or maybe a good idea?

As ever, grateful for people's thoughts.

Powerflushing doesn't have to be done with hot water, they mainly work from the chemicals and a high flow of water. A good powerflush machine can pump 90-100litres a minute, whereas the way you are on about doing it you will be lucky to get 5.

Don't give up the day job!

If you need a powerfloush than get someone in that knowes
what they are doing.
What you are proposing borders on the dangerous.

Not a great idea, you will flood the loft for one and everything electrical must be isolated. Not as easy a job as it sounds to powerflush.Having a basic grasp of your system helps. You don`t have that unfortunately. Search powerflushing. ;)

I finished second part of the mains flush today (as recommended on this forum and other diy guides). Last week I flushed and then added x400. Today I drained down then flushed all rads one by one.

Three letters from Tony were all it took for me to realise that my daft idea would be a waste of time since all it would be doing would be circulating an ever diluted amount of cleanser.

That said how the heck would it overflow the FE tank? Maybe the person who said that was referring to the mains flush? All the guides including the one from this website ensure that there is a drain off and that the system is closed at the FE tank during the flush. Suffice to say, I didn't flood the loft.....
