The system is about six years old and has been working fine and serviced regularly.

Today the better half switched on the heating and a while later we realised there was no heat.

I've never actually had to look at it myself before as it has never stopped.

The tank sits a few metres from the burner at the same height. The riello can't start it try's burns a bit then stops. The tigerloop only has maybe 3/4 inch of oil in it. I assume it should be higher than this and thus the burner isn't getting the oil.

Might not be the tigerloop causing the problem.

Is the burner going through a 12sec pre purge (motor/fan) on and then ignition/flame on/flame established (this is important). After another five seconds the burner then locks out?

Have you loosened off the incoming feed under the boiler to see if oil is flowing out? Might just be an airblock. Have you you got oil in the tank?

A frequent cause of ignition for a few seconds and then lock out is a photocell problem.....worth a clean up, anyway.

The burner is doing the prestage ok then locks out. Loads of oil. I loosened off the bleedscrew and there is a lot of air coming out. There doesn't seem to be enough oil in the tiger loop and then air is getting sucked down.

That`s right, that`s right, that`s right. that`s right really luv your tiger loop, be honest anyone in their 40`s completely thought of that when seeing this thread. Mud, what a band, Not `arf mate! Halcyon days when kids ran around ******* naked in the summer and it was totally appropriate.Sounds a bit weird that doesn`t it, probably have me p.c confiscated now. We didn`t have sick b*astards in the 70`s. :(

The tiger loop sounds OK. for oil level. To check its integrity, try starting up the boiler and look at the flow through the unit. Are there any bubbles? If not, then no problem there.
Does the burner fire after the prepurge and then go out? If so, then photocell is suspect as Burnerman says. Common problem on RDB burners.
