Hi, I'd appreciate some advice on this. I have a 4ft deep crawl space under my floor. The solum is slightly damp earth so I've been advised to damp proof it to prevent damp and smells rising up.I'm laying thick polythene and weighing it down with a few inches of gravel.I need about 5 bulk bags.I'm assuming the gravel will be wet so I'm wondering, will I actually be creating a problem with damp rather than preventing one?
Many thanks, Jonny.

As above, don't bother with the Polythene.

Worth further consideration? if you can get in there with a 4 Foot headroom think about insulating the underside of the flooring and increasing the number of air bricks.

it is wet and windy in your part of the world?

Who gave you the advice and why?

This was a common feature of houses built up to the early part of the last century and is generally not a problem if the ventilation is adequate.

Hi, I was hoping it wasn't needed but the guy who advised me to do it was confident there would eventually be an issue with damp smells entering the house. Maybe he thought there could be an issue with installing adequate vents as the walls are 3ft thick. There are no problems with wind but the land around the house is very wet.The sub floor is damp to touch but there's never puddles even after days of rain.I reckon I'll take the advice and save a few quid. Thanks a lot, Jonny.
