Hi

I need to redo the kitchen floor as it had been laid on concrete without a DPM. 3 years have gone by and the laminate is ruined!

After googling, there appear to be lots of DPM products on rolls or packs of sheets, but they have different 'weights'. What do I need please? The area I need to cover is approx. 11 ft x 14ft.

Many thanks

It depends what you are fitting, but ideally you need to create an air pocket between the new and old surfaces, for laminate there are a few large poket products availble, for sheet vinyl there is F-Ball's Isolator membrane. It's not advisable to just lay heavy guage sheet plastic onto the floor as the subfloor will sweat badly.

Originally, we had laminate flooring down for 15 years without any problem. It was put down by my husband and he lined the floor with this thick blue polythene sheeting which I think was at least a metre wide. Each section had a good overlap. There was no air pocket in between the membrane and the laminate and as said, we didn't have any problem with it. I just fancied a change.

When the most recent laminate was laid (3 years ago), I just through the polythene away without giving it any thought as to why is was there in the first place. We laid the green fibreboard underlay and then laminate straight on top.
