Building shed on brick paving - advice please

Hi all,

I plan to put a shed in our garden. It's not a large garden but am planning on putting in a 7 foot by 8 foot shed which I will use as a gym, just weights and doesn't need to be very big.

The part of the garden I plan to put the shed is a brick area. I'm hoping this avoids the need to lay concrete but I need your advice. Can I just drop a shed on top or do I need to approach it in a certain way?

If the bricks are laid on a good foundation themselves then it should be fine. What's underneath?

Not sure. I suppose it won't hurt to dig down through a couple of them since the shed will sit on top. What should I be looking for being a novice and all?

Some effort having been made at a decent foundation is all, ie. not just laid on soil. If it's a well constructed patio I wouldn't worry. But then unless the bricks are on quicksand it's unlikely to go anywhere with just a shed and a bench on it, if you're trying to avoid spending any money on it. A good shed will come with a good base with timber joints to spread the load. Needs to be level though. Get a tongue and groove shed and don't buy anything from B&Q etc - overpriced rubbish.

Got my shed from Urban Forest Timber Buildings, they're in Brierley Hill. Built like the proverbial brick sh*thouse and cheap compared to the flimsy nonsense at B&Q.

Just in case anyone should pick up a recommendation of Urban Forest from here: they appear to be out of business as of the last couple of weeks. They have my deposit, never showed up on delivery date and don't answer any form of contact.

Jon92 - They are not out of business, i spoke to them today.

I'm having a nightmare with their service. I'd highly recommend getting your money back and saving yourself the headache of dealing with them.

I had part of the shed delivered three weeks ago and I've been let down twice since then, wasting my holiday from work and I barely hear from them. Their phones just go through to voicemail and rarely get a response from e-mailing.

Avoid Urban Forest Timber Buildings. I've seen some poor reviews of their shed's build quality and their communication and customer service doesn't exist!!!

Well you deserve some sort of award for getting hold of them. Until the actual delivery date they had been quite efficient in letting me know what was happening when, but suddenly they stopped communicating, and like you I wasted a day off work for the delivery.
Rather difficult to get the money back when they won't talk to me (if I lived nearer I would pay them a visit) - so my next stop is trading standards.

@jon92 - how did you get on in the end?

I complained to trading standards in the end. I would urge anyone else to do the same if they are having issues with Urban Forest Timber Buildings (UFTB) as it's disgusting how they treat their customers.

I ended up building the shed myself and had to purchase additional timber as they were not capable to send everything out.

a shop bought structure off that size will have a reduction in width at head height so no weights above chest height

They spun me a story about having electrical problems on their industrial estate, giving this as the reason for not turning up and not letting me know. A quick call to a couple of other companies on the same estate revealed that there had been no such problems. However they offered me another delivery date so I gave them one more chance and they did turn up, albeit a couple of hours late, and with a complete shed. I have to admit it seems to be of reasonable quality - the door was sticking and I had to plane it down myself but otherwise seems ok.

I've been trying to order a shed from this lot for ages. They don't respond to email or voicemail. They are never actually there to answer the phone. They have an utterly useless online ordering system where you are expected to buy your shed before even finding out what the delivery cost is or if your area is covered by their free construction service. It looks like a **** business working with good materials to me. The complaints about the product tend to relate to the build quality and not the timber. Obviously their CS is incompetent and they seem incapable of managing an order book.

Timing is important here, I need to be confident that they will actually deliver on time and I've got absolutely no confidence that they even know how to tie their own shoelaces.

For those of you that have spent money with them and have not had delivery etc: if you've paid by credit card, hit them with a chargeback or s75 claim. They promote payment by paypal but I'd avoid that, and get the deposit at least paid for on credit card so you can get a full refund if they start to dick about.

Does anybody know of any better businesses that (actually) supply tanalised sheds? South-East in particular. Thanks!

Bumping this - does anybody know of any (reliable) companies that supply tanalised sheds at a decent price? I can see some others on eBay but they are based in the same area as this rabble so I am concerned that they are one-and-the-same.

Alternatively.... are there any good suppliers for the timber needed to build my own? Part of me wants to do this anyway as it sounds fun.... although a self-build 16ft shed would be pretty much the biggest project I've ever taken on.
