Arrghhhhhh....

Another disaster to add to the recent expenses.

Spotlight blub (which was on), fell on to our vinyl in the kitchen floor (only 6 months old), and melted a 5p size piece

It is a wood pattern, although the 'space' appearance between the printed planks is very thin.
I have worked out the pattern and have spare vinyl with the exact patterned piece that has melted.

Is it possible to repair this and cut a piece out?
Is it best to cut out as small an area as possible, or the whole plank?
Or is this an extremley difficult job (although not expecting it to be an easier one!)?
Cost to replace the vinyl in the kitchen is £420 and could do without the expense, but not looking to do a job that makes it look obvious it has been repaired.

Any advice on how to do this, or if indeed it can be done, is greatly apprecaited.

Many Thanks.

Chris

You could do as you suggest and cut a piece in. Or you could just claim off your insurance and get it all done (unless you excess is huge).

Is it possible to get a clean cut/appearance doing it this way?

Insurance would have been ok on contents (£100 excess), but as it is 'glued' it is deemed as building (so £100 + £200 excess!).
£120 less than paying myself. Almost seems not worth it.

To be honest I can't really see it working, rush mat or similar perhaps?

Dont think the wife will go for that :(

I've seen it done on youtube. Cut the new piece out bigger than the piece you are taking out.
Align the pattern and stick down.
Cut with stanley knife and then lift old piece and stick down new piece.

I would presume it is best to go along a visible line (ie around the plank design outer line), so it is less obvious.

If you are going to try it depends on whether your flooring is stuck down all over. If it is I would suggest overlaying the new bit and try to cut through the two layers at once, then glue to the floor.
If it is not fixed cut the patten piece as before but secure with vinyl tape laid face side up under the flooring and then drop the patch in, be warned though you need tape for vinyl as many other types will react with the vinyl.

Or you could stick a coin over the damage and watch in amusement as visitors try to pick it up! ;)

There is a cold "vinyl welding adhesive" on the market!

Basically it "melts" and therefore adheres the "edges" of vinyl flooring

I have had my (experienced) fitters use this on several/numerous jobs..........

........with very nixed results, and always an obvious join!!!!

Sorry, Best advice is to get a new piece of vinyl

Cheers folks. Going to have to consider a DIY job due to cost so any further advice really appreciated.

It can be fixed. You just need a pro. I will check your area tomorrow to see if I have someone I can recommend in your area.
