Hi guys, I've had a look and couldn't find anything that answers this specifically...

I want to move my consumer unit and meter from a partition wall that I plan on removing near to my front door. My current power supply is overhead, clipped down to where it enters the house, having it completely underground from the pole is not do-able, I was wondering if it is possible to have it clipped down the house to ground level, and then in ducting under ground level to come up from the floor inside the property at the required location. Most of the internal ground floor is up(suspended timber floor) for plumbing works at the minute anyhow so running the conduit would be easy at this stage.

Any experience on this would be appreciated:)

No reason why not, I've seen a lot done like that in the past, the other option with the same system is to fit an outdoor cabinet with the CU back to back, saves space inside.

Why is undergrounding from the nearest pole not possible out of interest?

The pole is close by, but in the village hall car park and I couldnt face having to dig up the Tarmac, if it was possible to just clip it down to ground level and then shoot under the house that would be my ideal outcome I think. Would I have to have some sort of steel protective casing at the lower level?

Yes, the DNO will deal with that, though conduit has been used in the past as it looks better.

Regarding the car park, excavation/reinstating would see the edges cut with a saw and the trench retarmaced, though you would bear the cost of that so maybe not the best idea!

Thank you. I am trying to get an electrician I know to have a look soon and then I will go from there.

The meter is not your property and the only people that can move it are the owners and they will charge more than you will probably want to pay.

Just to clear a couple of points.
If the meter position is being moved, the DNO will move the actual meter as well, they will probably even provide an isolator. So the supplier or MOP do not need to be involved

The question of cost has been talked about as long as I have been in the industry. The cost of a service alteration is strictly T & M (time & materials) with no profit being made or allowed. So any costs you have seen will ONLY relate to that job.
When I was doing this work (many, many years ago) customers were always surprised at the low cost as they had always been told it would be a fortune by a guy down at the pub or at work. It looks as "on the internet" can be added to that list!

All the DNOs will provide a quote within 5 days FREE that is valid for 180 days, so is it not better to just suggest that members ask for a quote.

BTW £ for £ the labour rates charged by DNOs are generally less that electricians, plumbers, garages charge. In some cases a 2 man jointing team can be cheaper that a single electrician.
Go figure

Thanks again westie!
winston, the costing isn't too bad from looking at the western powers estimating page, and irrelevant anyway, it has to be moved regardless, and I am aware who's property the meter is.
