virus removal

Hi, I have a virus that takes up my whole screen and task manager does not work. I find I can start in safe mode bit virus software does not run because of admin rights but I am logged in as administrator.
Any ideas? My next step would to see if I can download and run autoruns as this may show the offender. Its an old laptop on xp that had no virus software on yet, I was just removing some old software and downloading new but got virus before I managed to get avg on it.

Wipe the hard disk and reinstall the operating system.

Try some free software called combofix... this is generally good for virus removal.

Scan with security essentials and see if you can find the name of the virus. Once you have this you can see if there is a specific removal tool for it or how to remove it on Google.
