Hi,

I've lived in the house for nearly 10 years, the alarm system has been working fine, apart from a battery replacement when the house was rewired about 8 years ago. (Keypad, 3 sensors and front/back alarm box) - so not a big installation.
No idea when it was installed or which model it is.

The concern I have is that the Alarm Panel is located under the landing floor-boards, so when it came to battery replacement the carpet and floorboards were pulled up to change over.

I'm now coming to redecorate and I guess it's an opportunity to change the location.
Given this type of task, moving the alarm panel (eg airing cupboard in bathroom, loft, etc) would entail re-routing the power as well as the various connections.

Options I'm considering are: whether to leave alone, get some quotes to have the panel moved; or if it would be "simpler" to have a like-for-like new system installed with the panel suitably located.

If anyone can offer some advice from past experience it would be very much appreciated. If I should do something about it, any approximate costs would be helpful - I'm based in Leicestershire.

Many Thanks
Mark...

Get some quotes from local companies.

See whats on offer.

It is opportunnity to consider something more upto date, you can get a quote to get it moved as well as something new for conparison but theres probably a fair bit of work involved in moving it, difficult to say how much would be involved .

I wonder what complete numpty fitted the panel there ? Best bet is to get it resited , don't go for airing cupboard if it's hot in there as you will be chasing the battery more often due to the heat !

@sparkymarka Not sure about numpty, definitely muppet.

Thanks for the replies. I'll look for some local installers to get prices.

When I put my system in, I put the main panel (CPU) in the cupboard under the stairs.
About five years later, I felt it was taking up valuable cupboard space, so I moved in to ... under the floorboards.

Voilá ... more cupboard space ... and the intruder will even less likely be able to shut the system down.

Wasn't it The Drifters idea ... Under the floorboards

:D

There is an installation company in my neck of the woods that fit panels in airing cupboards on a regular basis.

However you can only advise that is moved to a more suitable location, when your called out to the unit for a repair.

If your not moving it yourself I would get quotes to upgrade to something as well as getting it moved.

So you remove the floor boards every 5 years to replace the battery ? Probably not ! If it's done right getting to the control panel does not stop the bell ringing !

Not sure about the bellbox I've got, but I think most now have a built-in timer. Usually set for 15minutes. I've seen/heard many bells/sirens go for 15min and no-one takes a blind bit of notice. Especially during the day when nearly everyone in the street is at work.

That leaves modem, dialer, internal sounder and strobe. All can be 'got at' if the CPUs just sitting there saying "come and get me"

Incidentally my 'under floor' arrangement is accessed through a hinged hatch in the floor, with a 3ft³ space, comfortable (amost) seating position, adequate lighting.

A few other gizmos down there as well: DVR etc

People do take notice, there eyes are drawn to the sound and they do look. (quote I have seen/heard....).

Most find them a nusiance when they go off, but they will still look.

In a street where a certain houses bellbox goes off regular, people still look and say that alarm at x is going off again.

Now if they see something when they look they may well report it, people do.

Not really under the floor boards then is it ? with a 3ft space, bit misleading to the op , that's its ok to put under e floorboards !

but by then the modem/dialer has done it's job and notified whoever they are set for?

Hi, Thanks for the various feedback.

I've contacted one supplier in Leicestershire and mentioned the following:

- Underfloor placement might have been the preferred option at the time.

- As a rough guide (without an inspection) it may cost between £150/£200 to move the panel and modify / re-route cabling.

I will try and few more costs to get an idea. What I don't want to end up with is an alarm box in the bedroom.

As a follow on question, do you know if having the alarm panel in the under-stairs cupboard a problem? i.e. the panel should always be placed upstairs? (are there any regulatory requirements)?
