Hi All.

I'm new here and after some advice.

I recently moved into a property and previous owners were heavy smokers so I covered the kitchen wall in Zinsser bin which seems to have worked a treat.

My OH then painted the ceiling and left marks all away around the walls as he couldn't be bothered to do it properly and cut in!

There were thick lines around the walls and when I tried painting over them you could clearly see the lines still so I sanded them back to try and blend them in a bit.

I then painted the walls with a white basecoat but its now had 6 coats and where I've sanded a yellow is coming though... I couldn't work out what this was until I painted over a smaller patch on the wall with Zinsser as I'd missed a patch when I did it the first time and realised the yellow that's seeping through is exactly the same colour as the Zinsser bin!

I have tried going over it again with just white matt but no matter how many coats I give it the walls just get whiter but the yellow bits just stay as they are and it looks awful!

Any ideas how I can salvage this please??

As I understand it you had a wall with nicotine staining that you coated with BIN which worked you then sanded off a strip cutting through the BIN and releasing the nicotine again.

BIN is famed for "flashing" that is showing through the next layer of paint the main reason is BIN has a very smooth slightly shiny surface this is worse if the BIN is applied with a brush and the topcoat with a roller because of the different texture.

Repaint a strip around the top of the wall use a brush for cutting in and paint over with a mini roller as close to the ceiling as you can. This will reseal the nicotine and then you can repaint.

Better still make your other half do it while you supervise sitting comfortably with a cup of tea and some biscuits as they caused the problem! ;) ;)

used to use this bin quite a lot, It was all the rage and did what it said on the tin. Then had a few costly failures since they had to make it under european laws (2010 ready) not blocking the nicotine, correspondence only said repeat process if required.
I have now resorted back to my old ways of thinning down solvent based undercoat by 50/50 and one coat over nicotine and guranteed it will block any damp/ smoke / nicotine..
well thats what i do now ~ dont care about the smell lol

Thanks - when you say repaint a strip around the top - do you mean with Zinsser or with the emulsion?

Thanks

With the zinsser to reseal the stain, then your finish over that after it is dry.
