Hi, having been burgled last week, I am considering putting up some CCTV but unfortunately I can't afford a proper system at the moment. As mostly it will be as a deterent I want to see if I can install some dummy ones. Are there any "decent dummy" cameras which look like real one and have a motion sensor with a light? Sorry if it's a daft question but am just trying to take some steps to stop this happening again. Ta

Whatever you do don't buy dummy cameras with flashing LEDs. There are no real cameras on the market featuring flashing LEDs - so the dummy ones stand out a mile.

As with most things you get what you pay for. Cheap cameras will give you grainy pictures. Presumably you've done the obvious things like upgrading your locks. Prevention is the key.

You'd be better off with a dummy bellbox. Get one of the Deltabells. Look at your neighbours to see where the best place is to put it - usually up by the eaves. Remember that a real bellbox will (often) have a cable going through the wall so it wouldn't be installed directly under a window, for example. You can get battery-powered flashing LEDs to put in dummies...

A "decent" dummy camera is a broken real one!

check on ebay you may be best of going with a cheaper cctv kit than going for dummy cameras . i have used a few of the cheaper kits before for customers who did not want to spend alot on fancy name's
they are some kits on there for arround £100 that will give you the deterrent and the recording if you ever do need it

I've always wondered about CCTV - if you have big obvious CCTV cameras and warning signs, arent the thieving scrotes just going to keep their hoodies up so you can't see their faces?

I'll be going with obvious alarm obvious locks concealed CCTV when I get that far in my refurb.

It's hard to say what a thief would think and doubtless different thieves would take different approaches. The main point of CCTV isn't really to get a video of your TV being stolen so that you can post it on FaceTube, it's mainly there for its deterrent factor.

Surprisingly, I understand that there's evidence that being watched has quite an effective psychological deterrent factor. Just having a cardboard cutout of a policemen in a shop or even just a pair of eyes painted on the wall has been shown to reduce crime. One assumes if a thief sees a camera, while they might think about covering their face, they might also be thinking that their crime is being committed to tape to be seen over and over again and that might give clues to their identity, they might be thinking that it's possible the video is being watched in real time and as they break in the police will be called.

So basically it raises the bar to entry. If you turn up at a house and there's locks, alarms, CCTV, barbed wire, GPMGs, etc you're going to take the easy option and burgle the house over the road.

Since I have fitted a camera that came from Canary Wharf, (very large dome camera on an arm) the great unwashed have stopped hanging around the alleyway.

No more rubbish on the floor.

It's a tricky one. Fitting large commercial camera on a domestic property would act as deterrent, the down side they ruin the look of the property. I installed a working system on my uncles home and that didn't stop thieves. He's had ladders stolen off his van and a bike stolen from his garden on separated occasions. On another occasion they broke in, lucky he has a working intruder system and left empty handed.

My advice if money's tight would be to fit screen printed back lit sounders such as the pyronix detalbell.
