Hi Folks,

I live in a house built in the 1960s it does from what I see have Cavity Wall Insulation but still outside walls are generally colder to touch than their inner counterparts.

On the outside wall I get around 12 - 13 degrees where as on an inside wall I get around 18 - 19 degrees

I have an infared thermometer.

Currently the walls appear to have been plastered and painted in some areas.

So I am wondering if I can buy Kingspan Kool Therm K18 and screw it directly onto the existing wall? Or should I build battens and screw it onto the battens.

Will this be concern for damp - Presently the room does not experience damp?

The wall in question is 7 feet wide by 7.5 high

So I guess I need 3 boards of 2100 x 1200

If I've understood stuff I've seen on here and stuff I've been told by BCO you'll need an air gap and a vapour barrier between insulation and cavity wall.

I think the vapour barrier is to prevent as far as possible warm air getting to the cold wall (behind the insulation) and condensing, the air gap is there to allow the wall to breathe (the cavity insulation prevents it breathing towards the outside)

Remember if you have any electrical points in that wall they'll need moving (guaranteed the cables will be too short)

Hey,

So what you mean is to put battens up. But would the wood not act as a thermal bridge?

Cheers,

Yes it could if you insulated between the battens but not if you fix the insulation to the batten face (timber is a better insulator than brick). Downside is not being able to fix anything to the walls...... you'll need plasterboard as well of course
