fitting lintel and building control

just a quick question

thinking of opening up the wall through the kitchen to the dinning room its a single brick wall believed to load bearing, we were hoping to end up with an opening off approximately 2.400mm then plus the 150mm either end to take the lintel on a pad stone, the question is will we have to notify building control of this?

A doddle of a job though.. Prop the above wall, fit a small steel beam to structural engineers spec, & make good.

hi thanks for the reply guys, after further inspection the wall is single brick just with the ceiling/floor joists on it, guess i won't need a structural engineers report or anything like that, and i just need a concrete one from jewsons or somewhere similar

thanks in advance, I've done lintels in the past but but all ways just had someone to say "chop that out there mate and chuck that lintel in" no thinking on my behalf about size and spec ha ha

Any old concrete lintel from Jewsons will not cut it, if you have got joists on your wall it is a loadbearing wall and a 2.4 opening is a fair size, seriously suggest you get some advice from someone that knows what they are doing before you go any further.

thanks for the reply, so a structural engineers report should be my next port of call?

As the wall is a structural alteration you will need building regs for it, ask them round for some free pre application advise. If you are lucky and speak to someone worth their salt they should be able to size a beam for you but worst case will be they ask for engineers calculations or you could suggest that you will use a heavy duty steel box lintel and see if that is acceptable.

wifey spoke to building control and basically they said they will be round after the lintel is installed before replastering

Really ? Surely they have given you an indication of what they will expect to see regarding lintel/beam used, trust me given what you describe with a floor loading from above a concrete lintel will not suffice.
Without engineers calculations I would expect to see something like HD Catnic box lintel used or a 178x102 UB installed.

Yes, and the inspector will say...."yes, that's fine, just get us some engineer's calcs so that we can check it"...........

I recently too out the load bearing wall between my kitchen and dining room. My BC guy advised my steel size and inspected it before fire boarding and plastering. Was very helpful.

I've just had the very same thing done.
1.8 meter structural single brick wall taken out that supports ends of rafters, and a catnic put in.
Luckily my partner knows a structural engineer who "sized up" the catnic.
I used a BHD100 which is rated at 39Kn up to 2700mm opening.
The structural engineer estimated a 17Kn load on the beam. I have a bathroom, some block built walls, a small bedroom and the upstairs hallway sitting on this. No loading from the loft.
I never needed pad stones, as both end were sitting on brick walls.
Building Control Officer has been round and is happy so far, you will need to fix two layers of plasterboard, staggered at the joins to conform to fire regs.

update on the lintel,

basically what i did got a copy of "spec" for a lintel i found online emailed it over to building control, he came round had a nose round said that it will be more than strong enough, but he will speak with the structural engineer in his office, next day he gave us the ok to put it in, so in it went, now just waiting for him to come back now its plastered and sign it off

There is no point getting him back once it is plastered!

He will need to see the end bearings and possibly the lintel sticker before you cover it up.
