Hi all,

Quick question. In my loft ive got a horizontal beam ( there are 2 in total about 2 mtrs apart) and they feel very loose. The house was built in 1972 and has been ecothermed/plasterboarded aswell before i moved in. There are the normal beams, with two long support beams going down the lenght of the loft, which have 4 supporting supports. My question is why is the cross member loose. Its a right pain in the ass when i go up to the loft because its about 1m high meaning ive got to bend down.

Is there anyway these can be changed to allow more room?

I assume you're referring to the purlin... well underpurlin in this image...

If so, they're structural and are there to reduce the span of the rafters, which may only be something like 100mm deep. If the purlins were not there, the rafter depth would have probably been something like 175/200mm. So to remove them completely, the size of the rafters would have to be increased, which would mean taking the roof off.

A hell of a lot of work just because you don't want to bend down in your loft.
