Hi

A bit difficult to describe but here goes (with pictures)

Ive stripped out a spare bedroom (upstairs) with a view to re-skim/decorate etc. When I ripped out the skirting board I punched a small hole in the plaster board & thought nothing of it apart from the rush of freezing cold air that came in.

I knocked a bigger hole (loads of freezing cold air) to see exactly what was on the other side. Its actually the void roof space of small sticky out roof that you can stand under outside (about two foot and extends the length of the house). The plaster board is nailed onto a timber frame that forms the bedroom wall. Best see the pictures to see what I mean.

There is no insulation at all within the sticky out roof space and none on the timber frame the plasterboard is attached too.

Ive uploaded the photos but they seem to have rotated ninety degrees, so please bear this in mind!

If I'm seeing this correctly you have an uninsulated stud wall between your bedroom and the outside roof void. If so the only option I see is to strip the plasterboard off of that wall, insulate it properly and re-board.

Yes. Fit a layer between the studs and then a continuous layer over - 30-40mm. Tape the joints and seal the gap top and bottom and re-board.

Most importantly the "floor" of the void is over the ceiling of the room under it. This should be insulated with 10" of glassfibre. I would make an access trap (lower right hand side), so the area could be used for Christmas decorations or to access the underneath of the roof to instal aerials/run electric cables etc.

Nah. The roof is an external projection.

Correct, the roof is an overhang that you can stand under outside. Might make a little trap door & cupboard tho`.

John ..when you say "then a continuous layer over - 30-40mm" ...what do you mean? Like some sort of insulation sheet.

Thanks

Yes, whatever you can get between plus a continuous layer of the same type of insulation over.

A righto. Might have to see if I can get it behind as there is no room (room side).

Thanks all

sjw64, hi.

Suggest you have a look for grants that will assist in the funding of the insulation

Up here the installation of insulation in either roofs or walls and now I believe floors is free to a lot of people including OAPs Etc, I am not sure of the criteria surrounding the above, but it is worth a look?
