I want to lower an area of my lawn (about 10sqm).

I'm thinking of carefully cutting the turf with a half moon tool, getting under the turf with a shovel and putting it to one side, then scrape some of the top soil away (about 50mm), then put the turf back.

I'm just concerned the finished turf will be all over the place when I'm finished 'cos the thickness of each lifted turf will vary.

Any advice would be appreciated.

One possible solution would be to create a frame, put a sod face down in it and use a blade to scrape it to a fixed thickness.

I have almost exactly the same question lurking ....

Thinking on it some, reckon I'll buy replacement turfs which come a standard thickness. Then its only (!) down to leveling the soil ...

Op, I can't specify thickness since you'll have to decide that based on your own turf. If it were me, I'd cut it first and keep it reasonably thick with a good couple of inches of soil. Above all, keep it moist. If you want to borrow a lawn lute to apply top dressing and some soil afterwards then let me know. I'll be going down to london in a few weeks to see my family and will happily lend one that looks like this to you for a bottle of white wine.

I've got it all done today, thank you very much for your help and also the offer of the lawn lute.

You're very kind.
