Really sounds like an ignition problem to me.....if you can normally hear the spark, that is. Could well be an igniter transformer fault - not uncommon.
Please post back with the findings!

ok, oil pressure is fine, observed the ignitors sparking away when unit was unscrewed from the wall, but no oil appeared to be present at the point of the sparking, he suggested the injector should be replaced as its very blackened locally, but he said he would consult someone else to consider whether there may be something electrical thats failing to open a valve or something beyond the bleed point of the oil( he is a 70 y/o plumber and dear relation and is open to suggestion), as i said, he will consult with someone tomorrow who is more technically experienced on the internal runnings, in the meantime, feel free to take a shot Burnerman et al :)

with regard to the transformer, i replaced that in 2009 i believe, is it the black box that clips on to the left hand side, i may try swapping that for one i have access to( bro in law is a neighbour lol)

Ok, so now we know there's a spark, thats progress!
On (almost) every oil pump, there is an internal valve opened on command by a solenoid.....the external coil which is prone to failure causes the oil flow to remain shut.
If you have a BFP pump, the coil failure is legendary.....the Riello ones less so.
Presumably a new coil will be tried soon!
John :)

ok, he pressed reset with the bleed screw out and oil squirted out, not sure what that eliminates, if anything, I shall pass on both of the last comments to him, not sure how easy to replace coil or clean filter is, so can we rule out transformer, thanks for the help guys

The solenoid coil is external and very easily replaced, (on the side of the pump with a wire connection) as is the nozzle really....the nozzle has a very fine sintered copper filter on the back of it, and that's the only bit that should be removed. The nozzle may well be black and sooty, but still be working well enough. I'd replace the nozzle every year or so....£6 or thereabouts.
John :)

another fault that it could be but more unlikely is a faulty control box but i think its more than likely what has been said so far

defo not control box thanks, ive tried that already cheers for replies, il get back tot let you know of any progress

well this is embarrassing, it was the photocell(AGAIN), the only thing i didnt check, think i might buy an extra one for checking next time cos thats 3 times in 15 years, all from a slightly different fault, sorry for wasting your time guys
