I have a outside light which the previous owner wired up into a existing light fitting so it came on with the hall light. I wish to put the light on a sepearte switch. Inside the light switch the live is switched.

How do I go about wiring this in so it can be on a independent switch? How does the wiring go? There is a junction box in the loft where the power comes from the fuse board. I can use a permanent live from here. But do I go from there to the switch then to the light?

Thanks in advance!

Does the neutral for the outside light come from the same JB? If so run a new live to the new switch as you suggest and connect the existing switch live to the other terminal.

The neutal goes no where at the monent I would have to put that into the junction box along with the connection to the permanent live

Sort of, yes.

But you said that
I have a outside light which the previous owner wired up into a existing light fitting so it came on with the hall light
.

That means that there is already a neutral to the outside light!
There will already be a live to the existing switch, so you need to loop the live into the existing switch and make it a 2 gang switch. All you need then is to run the switched live (and earth, of course) to the outside light from the switch.

Simples!

EDIT.
If your previous owner made the connection at the hall light, then take your switched live to the hall light. Remove the live feed that goes to the ouside light and connect it to the new switched live.

Hi, yes that's correct it is a lighting circuit you taking it from ?

yes ?

Hi, apologies. I missed the 'lighting' on you're drawing.

You appear to have a two way switch which i assume switches the hall light from two locations ?

I would stick with your plan as drawn, and add another switch as you may not have a permanent live at that location.

Yes it switches from the hall and the landing. Annoyingly the per many live is at the top of the stairs.

I was going to replace the 1 gang switch with a 2 gang switch. Run the permanent live into the existing casing along side the switched live

Hi, yes that would be fine, you just keep the wiring separate from the existing, i.e. no "loop"
