Hi folks

Does anyone know where to find the GC number for the aforementioned boiler?

My parents are having trouble with the pilot light going out. BG have replaced T/C and said if fault reappears then boiler will need a new gas valve which surprise surprise they say is no longer available. (Then mentioned my parents are entitled to a FREE estimate for a complete new heating system. So kind of them.)

I know it's a Space Saver MK II but don't know which variant. I took some external measurements and found a couple manuals online from which I can rule out it being a 30B or 60B. The measurements tie up with the MK II 50/ GC No. 40.313.03 Manual lists Gas Valve 203310 which seems to be available online.

I called BG but they say they don't have that information only the engineers and they can't get hold of it in any way. Is this number stamped anywhere that I can get access to without having to open a part I'm not qualified to? Clearly it may or may not be the 50 variant and I can't assume it is simple because of the boilers external dimensions - that would be silly.

I'm just trying to do some background before an engineer comes out again and possibly tells porkies to try and get some commission when in reality the boiler could run for years to come. Granted it's old but why should it be scrapped if parts are still available and a maintenance contract is being paid for?

To be honest I've partly got my guard up because my parents have had BG service the boiler all the time they've lived in that house (22 years) and every year without fail they're fed the same old bull about how the boiler is old and needs replaced. If it's so old and decrepit then why has it ran a further 22 years since they were first told to get shot of it?

Anyway sorry for the rant. If anyone can advise it would be appreciated.

Regards

Steve

The GC will be on the Data plate which is under the main white front case (this cover does not make up part of the combustion chamber and so can be removed - one screw at the bottom) from memory the gas valve is a Honeywell V4700 series and is still obtainable it is a job for a registered gas engineer though - try a local independent ;)

Thanks for that. Do you mean a data plate behind the little door at the bottom where the valve and T/S is? I've had a look in there but can only see a sticker with pilot relight instructions and a wiring schematic.

The Space saver 50b Mk2 BF and the 50 Mk2 OF both have a Maclaren gas valve.
It looks like the 40 / 50 and 60 mk2s all had maclarens.

If thats the Case it will look like this,
valve004.jpg

And it is obsolete has been for a long while. This is why its best to change the boiler before your hand is forced into making a quick decision ;)

Not according to my manuals bud.

Honeywell valves on the 40.313.03. Have the destructions here.... although to be fair that is the OF boiler.

If it is a honeywell V4700 then its standard BG van stock.

Edit:
Right just had another look,

The early models had the maclaren valve, models after serial number 0002001 had the 24v honeywell V8600

Do you recognise the photo btw

looks like that but brown not blue if that makes a difference

Pretty sure the browns ones are long gone - lots of websites say they have them. Then when it comes to the crunch they suddenly are not in stock.

Yep obsolete for 20 years ,
Still got a brand new one will be keeping it for a while yet before it goes on ebay
