Mines about 9 years old and I'm still using Vista.

So the questions are:

Windows 7 or 8?

And what would be a decent spec for about £500?

And should I get the operating system with it or separate?

Cheers guys.

What do you do with it?

£500 is a lot for a barebones PC if you don't do much with it.

Windows 7 or Windows 10, Skip 8 (there is no 9).

I don't do a lot really. Bit of office printing (letters), general Internet stuff like Facebook and forums. A bit of photography so I need some memory for storage. That's about it really. I don't do games of watch movies.

It's fast loading that I want without waiting ages. Wouldn't something with 8k memory be faster?

The reason why Microsoft are bringing out Windows 10 (no 9 for some reason), and offering a free upgrade to all W7 and W8 users, is that few people wanted W8 (basically because it's crap) and few people decided to upgrade from W7 (because W8 is crap).
I hope they've learnt from their mistakes. Vista was another failure.

Don't buy Dell either!

I bought one a few weeks ago and it lasted 4 days before playing up. I was very disappointed with the quality too as it weighed as light as a feather!

The call centre helpline was crap too and I ended up sending it back for a refund.

Forgot to say that its worth giving John Lewis a look in as they give you 2 years warranty.
Might wait for Windows 10 to come out now which should be out by July I am told.

I've had four desktops from pcspecialst.com in the last couple of years. You can get a decent spec for five hundred quid and they'll put whatever OS you want on it. Personally I like win7. Win 8 is ok on the couple of laptops and tablets I've got but it's crap on a desktop.
